16-year-old UK school girl has higher IQ than Einstein

A 16-year-old schoolgirl in the UK is believed to have an IQ higher than Einstein after scoring a record 161 on the Mensa brain test, according to a report.

Lauren Marbe stunned her teachers by scoring 161 on the Mensa brain test after she was entered with other pupils from her school.

The teenager loves fake tanning, having blonde highlights, manicures and getting glammed up for TOWIE parties with her friend, the 'Daily Mail' reported.

However it appears that as well as being very pretty, she also has a beautiful brain. Lauren's amazing brain test score means she is brighter than physicist Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates and even scientist Albert Einstein - who all have an IQ of 160.

Einstein never took an IQ test as none of the modern intelligence tests existed during the course of his life, but experts believe he had an IQ of around 160.

Soon, petrol prices may change daily

NEW DELHI: Soon, petrol price could move daily just like in the US, Europe and Brazil. The oil ministry is pushing state-run fuel retailers to revise the price every day in tune with international rates and the rupee's value against the greenback.

Top government sources said the idea is being discussed at the top level of the ministry and the brass of fuel retail companies. IndianOil Corporation, the country's largest fuel retailer, has been tasked to draw up a note on the concept.

Admittedly, it is early days. "The idea is very much on the high table. But a formal proposal is yet to be drawn up," a ministry source said in response to TOI's query. Fuel retailers review petrol price on the 15th and last day of each month.

Vodafone blocks Aircel SMSs for not paying fee

CHENNAI: Vodafone has blocked all short messaging services (SMSs) to the Aircel network over the issue relating to non-payment of termination charges. Airtel had already blocked Aircel just before Diwali.

This leaves Aircel consumers with no SMS access to the two biggest telecom operators in the country. While Airtel had issued a blanket ban on SMS to phones on the Aircel network covering the whole country, Vodafone has blocked Aircel in only Chennai and the rest of Tamil Nadu, New Delhi and Karnataka.

The Aircel spokesperson confirmed Vodafone's action to block SMS services between the two operators. The spokesperson also said that the dispute landed at the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) on Thursday for resolution but the hearing has been deferred till Friday. Vodafone declined to comment on the issue.

Google services may be shut down in Egypt

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/thumb/msid-18485183,width-300,resizemode-4/google1.jpgCAIRO: Egypt's telecommunication authority said that all Google services must be shut down to fully suspend YouTube in the country over an anti-Muslim film.
Head of Egypt's National Telecommunication Regulatory Authority Abdal-Rahamn al-Sawi said that in order to shut down YouTube in Egypt, as per a court verdict, all Google services must be shut down as Google provides its services over several servers.
The Egyptian administrative court had ordered that video-sharing website YouTube be blocked for a month for hosting the anti-Islam film that triggered deadly outrage across the Muslim world last year.

The court obligated that Egyptian authorities take measures to block access to the site for a month, after a complaint by an Egyptian who accused YouTube of being a "threat to social peace" by putting the US-made film on line.

See why Google is paying Apple $1billion

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/thumb/msid-18479130,width-300,resizemode-4/1/3rd-YouTube-India-viewers-access-videos-on-mobile-Google.jpgSYDNEY: Google will pay Apple one billion dollars next year to keep its position as the default search engine in iOS, a report has claimed.
The financial services firm came to the figure in a report titled "The Next Google is Google" after taking a closer look at how Google makes and spends money in the mobile space.
Morgan Stanley analyst Scott Devitt based the figure on the fact that Google and have a deal in place which sees Apple reap a certain amount of money per device sold with Google.com as the default search engine, the Age reports.
Devitt estimated the cost Google has been paying to Apple per device has been growing year-on-year and that so too has the number of iOS devices Apple has sold.
Because of this, he estimated that Apple would in 2014 be raking in about one billion dollars from Google for the privilege of keeping Google.com as iOS's default search engine ahead of rivals Bing and Yahoo.
{{ADD}}
According to the paper, the deal Google has with Apple is similar to one it has with the makers of the Opera and Mozilla web browsers, which both have Google.com as the default search engine.
Morgan Stanley reported the Mozilla Foundation is expected to get 400 million dollars in 2014 in its deal with Google, the paper said.

Infosys to mentor 16 start-ups in UK

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/thumb/msid-18469501,width-300,resizemode-4/infosysblr2.jpgBANGALORE: India's second largest IT company Infosys said it will assign a local mentor to 16 of the United Kingdom's emerging digital, wireless, and mobile software technology companies visiting Bangalore during their inaugural Web Mission 2013 to India.

Britain's most promising start-ups are on an entrepreneur-led trade mission to Bangalore and New Delhi this week with the aim of developing new relationships and opening up their business to the Indian market.

Some of these firms such as BuffaloGrid, aim to provide a mobile charging facility in rural areas in areas Africa and India which get little or no electricity, at five cents of charge an hour. Others such as Ambiental digitally map flood risk in a region, to help insurance companies decide on premium charge for a region.

Infosys hosted the first major session in Bangalore and will provide each company with a UK-based mentor to support them and drive business opportunities in the sub-continent.

During the session at the Infosys campus in Bangalore, Infosys Executive Co-Chairman S Gopalakrishnan, spoke to the entrepreneurs about the early stages of Infosys as a Pune based start-up, founded in 1981. "Not that long ago, Infosys walked in the same shoes as these entrepreneurs," Gopalakrishnan said.

"We built our business to become a global company in three decades, so I hope to bring some lessons about entrepreneurship in India to these companies. We are supporting them both in India and, after they return to the UK, helping and advising them on how to capitalize on the opportunities for emerging technology companies in the Indian market."

Bruce Hellman, the chief executive officer of uMotif, one of the Web Mission companies, said: "Once a small business itself, Infosys knows exactly the challenges we have in building our company, and I know that working with a global leader will help uMotif open doors and identify opportunities that might take much longer otherwise. I am particularly looking forward to exploring how Infosys can help us take our patient-focused adherence and self-care software to the Indian market."

In the past it would be Indian outsourcing firms scouting for business in markets such as UK, Europe's biggest market. But with a recessionary climate in Europe, the tech trend seems to have reversed. In 2011, UK exports to India increased by 29% - the country's largest non-EU export market.

The Mission is supported by the Technology Strategy Board and UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), alongside other private sponsors. The eighth in a series of Missions organized, it is designed to help successful early stage businesses accelerate their growth potential overseas.

India developing Agni-VI ballistic missile

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/thumb/msid-18397466,width-300,resizemode-4/CCS-in-principle-approval-for-indigenous-AWACS-project.jpgBANGALORE: India is developing a long-range nuclear-capable Agni-VI ballistic missile that would carry multiple warheads allowing one weapon system to take out several targets at a time.

"Agni-V is major strategic defence weapon. Now we want to make Agni-VI which would be a force multiplier," DRDO chief V K Saraswat said here on Friday.

Refusing to divulge the range of the new under-development missile, he said the force multiplier capability of the missile would be because of its multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicle (MIRV) capability.

The Agni-5 ballistic missile, which was test-fired in April last year, has a range of upto 5,500 kms and it is believed that the Agni-6 would have a range longer than its predecessor.

"It will have force multiplier capability by the MIRV approach which would enable us to deliver many payloads at the same time using only one missile.

"Work is on in this area and designs have been completed. We are now in the hardware realisation phase," he said.

DRDO officials said once the Agni-6 is developed, it would propel India into the elite club of nations with such a capability including the US and Russia.

The DRDO chief said his organisation was also working towards developing a cruise missile defence programme which would enable the armed forces to defend against low-flying cruise missiles and enemy aircraft.

Google wins landmark advertising case in Australia

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/thumb/msid-18363099,width-300,resizemode-4/googlenew2.jpgCANBERRA: Global search engine Google won a landmark court case in Australia when the country's High Court ruled the internet giant was not responsible for messages conveyed by paid advertisers on its site.

The finding ends a six-year legal battle between Google and Australia's consumer watchdog, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), which accused Google of engaging in misleading and deceptive conduct over paid advertisements.

The case related to search results in 2006 and 2007, where a search for Honda Australia would show a paid advertisement for a Honda competitor, CarSales. The ACCC said the ads were deceptive, as they suggested CarSales was linked to Honda Motor Co Ltd.

But in a unanimous finding, five judges of Australia's High Court ruled in favor of Google, overturning a ruling from the Federal Court. The lower court had ordered Google to set up a compliance program to make sure paid advertisements on its search engine were not misleading.

The five High Court judges said Google did not create the sponsored links and the company was not responsible for messages in the links.

"Ordinary and reasonable users of the Google search engine would have understood that the representations conveyed by the sponsored links were those of the advertisers, and would not have concluded that Google adopted or endorsed the representations," the court said.

Google issued a brief statement saying it welcomed the decision.

A Google search for Honda Australia displayed paid ads for Honda Australia's website.

A sleeping Nasa spacecraft catches a monster comet 800 million km away

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/thumb/msid-18367502,width-300,resizemode-4/comet1.jpgNEW DELHI: A Nasa spacecraft that had been "put to sleep" has photographed a comet with a 64,000 kilometer long tail hurtling towards the Sun.

Deep Impact, the spacecraft, acquired the first images of comet C/2012 S1 (ISON). The images were taken by the spacecraft's medium-resolution imager over a 36-hour period on January 17 and 18, 2013.

At that time Deep Impact was 793 million kilometers away from the comet, a Nasa statement said.

"The distance limits our bandwidth, so it's a little like communicating through a modem after being used to DSL. But we're going to coordinate our science collection and playback so we maximize our return on this potentially spectacular comet," said Tim Larson, project manager for the Deep Impact spacecraft at Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

ISON is lurking just inside of Jupiter at present. In November, it will come to within 1.6 million kilometers of the Sun, according to Nasa.

The intense heat will evaporate its ice and make it glow - thus making it visible from Earth.

The heat may be so great that the comet may completely burn up. If it survives, it will pass near the Earth in December.

But it will not be a threat to Earth - getting no closer to Earth than about 40 million miles on December 26, 2013.

Long-period comets like ISON are thought to arrive from the solar system's Oort cloud, a giant spherical cloud of icy bodies surrounding our solar system so far away its outer edge is about a third of the way to the nearest star (other than our sun).

Every once in a while, one of these loose conglomerations of ice, rock, dust and organic compounds is disturbed out of its established orbit in the Oort cloud by a passing star or the combined gravitational effects of the stars in the Milky Way galaxy.

With these gravitational nudges, so begins a comet's eons-long, arching plunge toward the inner solar system.

ISON was discovered on September 21, 2012, by two Russian astronomers using the International Scientific Optical Network's 40-centimeter telescope near Kislovodsk.

NASA's near-earth object program office has determined that the comet is more than likely making it first-ever sweep through the inner solar system. Having not come this way before means the comet's pristine surface has a higher probability of being laden with volatile material just spoiling for some of the sun's energy to heat it up and help it escape.

With the exodus of these clean ices could come a boatload of dust, held in check since the beginnings of our solar system. This released gas and dust is what is seen on Earth as comprising a comet's atmosphere (coma) and tail.

Launched in January 2005, Deep Impact has traveled over 7 billion kilometers in space till date. It has executed close flybys of two comets - Tempel 1 and Hartley 2 - and performed scientific observations on two more - comet Garradd and now ISON, Nasa said.

The spacecraft finished its primary mission in 2007. Preliminary results indicate that although the comet is still in the outer solar system, more than 763 million kilometers from the sun, it is already active. As of Jan. 18, the tail extending from ISON's nucleus was already more than 40,000 miles (64,400 kilometers) long.

Dell buyout: What it means for Microsoft

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/thumb/msid-18363588,width-300,resizemode-4/microsoft2k.jpgSEATTLE/SAN FRANCISCO: Microsoft is playing defense with a $2 billion loan to help Dell's founder buy back the world's No.3 PC maker as it seeks to shore up support for Windows and beat back the march of Google's Android.

The investment in the landmark $24 billion buyout led by Michael Dell marks the latest step in Microsoft's plan to gain more influence over the hardware supply chain - a departure from the decades-old, software-centric philosophy that helped it dominate the computing world but is now increasingly under threat.

It is far from clear, however, if this strategy will be successful, while the world's largest software maker risks upsetting other computer producers.

"It doesn't mean it's a bad move, but it's definitely defensive. Microsoft is realising it must be much more engaged in the hardware business than it used to be, it needs to be making bets and forming relationships," said Andrew Bartels, an analyst at Forrester Research.

The company that built its fortune on making high-priced software to go in other companies' computers is inching closer to Apple's belief that software and hardware must be closely integrated for the sake of the user experience.

Microsoft struck a deal to pay Nokia to make phones running Windows software in 2011 and a year later invested in Barnes & Noble's Nook e-reader. It then launched its own computer, the Surface tablet, in October, which rankled some PC makers initially.

In the face of declining PC sales and the onslaught of Apple's iPad, "Microsoft has taken more unconventional measures than they would have in the past," said Sid Parakh, an analyst at investment firm McAdams Wright Ragen.

This time, Microsoft made extra efforts not to alienate its other PC makers, talking to them before inking the deal, said sources familiar with Microsoft's relations with its partners, and holding off from an ownership stake.

"Microsoft reached out (at the highest levels) a bit before all of it came out," one of the people said. "There were multiple conversations. Clearly they put some thought into it and definitely a schedule was pulled together."

Even so, world No.1 PC maker Hewlett-Packard (HP) issued a statement critical of the deal.

Dell "faces an extended period of uncertainty and transition that will not be good for its customers," HP said, adding that Dell's ability to invest in products and services will be extremely limited with its debt load.

Lenovo Group Ltd said it remains focused on products and customers rather than "distracting financial maneuvers and major strategic shifts."

Microsoft, advised by Lazard, declined to comment on the terms of the Dell loan, or what exactly it gets in return, but made it clear it would look for "opportunities to support" companies that buy in to Windows, in whatever form. That suggests this may not be its last third-party investment.

Still, there is no guarantee that Microsoft's loan will give it any sway over Dell at all. One former Microsoft executive said the deal was pointless.

"I know Michael (Dell), he will continue to run his empire the way he has always done - without any outside influence," said Joachim Kempin, once Microsoft's top executive in charge of its relationships with PC makers, who left the company in 2002.

Platform wars

Chief executive Steve Ballmer made it clear last year that he sees Microsoft as a "devices and services" company with an explicit interest in hardware, whoever it is made by.

"Microsoft has every interest to keep such a key player in its ecosystem alive and well," said Al Hilwa, an analyst at tech research firm IDC. "Dell supplies a large number of Microsoft customers with hardware, and it is important that their confidence is bolstered in the overall Microsoft ecosystem."

Dell decided last year to focus its tablet strategy on the new Windows 8 operating system, in contrast to rivals such as Samsung, Asus and Lenovo, which are hedging or leading with Google's Android system, and HP which said this week it would make a Google Chromebook.

Dell did experiment with Android with its Streak tablet in 2010, but it flopped.

"This investment might help Microsoft influence whether Dell adopts Android or not, that is likely the goal behind this," said Parakh.

The loan, negotiated by Microsoft's chief financial officer Peter Klein, takes the form of a 10-year subordinated note and will pay 7 percent to 8 percent interest, according to sources familiar with the deal.

It is not clear how much sway Microsoft will have on Dell's strategy, but the two have been close partners for 25 years, and will likely build on that.

"I don't think Microsoft is going to run Dell at any time or have a dispositive say in what Dell does," said one source familiar with Microsoft's thinking, who asked not to be named. "Microsoft wants to continue to have a strong and ever deepening relationship with Dell and you can take it as the expectation on both sides."

PCs are clearly in decline, with sales falling last year for the first time in a decade as the popularity of tablets surges.

Some analysts suggest Microsoft got involved in the deal to learn more from Dell about selling to businesses and individuals.

"Dell is one of the best at building hardware and putting an operating system on it," said Michael Cherry, an analyst at Directions on Microsoft, an independent consultancy.

With the rise of Google trying to sell into enterprises, it should help Microsoft to have some influence over one of the largest IT vendors, said Parakh.

Microsoft has not always been successful in its tech investments.

Its multi-billion dollar bets on cable firms AT&T and Comcast in the late 1990s did not yield success. Its $150 million in a struggling Apple in 1997 ended a long-running patent spat between the two companies, but saved Apple and put it on course to eclipse Microsoft financially.

"Apple is the model, and Microsoft can't become Apple overnight," said Bartels at Forrester. "But it needs to have really good partners."

Google doodles for Mary Leakey's 100th birthday

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/thumb/msid-18363021,width-300,resizemode-4/Mary-Leakey.jpg
NEW DELHI: Google, today, commemorates Mary Leakey's 100th birthday anniversary with an attractive doodle. Leakey, a renowned British archaeologist and anthropologist, was born on February 6, 1913 in London, England and is well known for her significant discoveries and exploring the fossils of the ancient hominines. She collaborated with her husband Louis Leakey through a large part of her career and her three sons also entered the same field. She died on December 9, 1996 at the age of 83.

Leakey's discoveries included the fossilised Proconsul skull, an extinct ape that is believed to be ancestor to humans. Another discovery was that of the Zinjanthropus skull, an early hominin, at Olduvai Gorge. She is also credited with developing a system to classify stone tools found at Olduvai as well as discovering Laetoli footprints. Over the course of her career, Leakey wrote four books.

Her passion towards unearthing the fossils was somewhat influenced by John Frere, an antiquarian, and Sheppard Frere, an archaeologist. Moreover, she had a chance to accompany Elie Peyrony during an excavation at Les Eyzies, where she came across collection scrapers and other tools from the dump. It is believed that at this phase her interest in prehistory gradually sparked.

Google's doodle to mark the 100th birth anniversary of Mary Leakey with an image of a female archaeologist working at an excavation site marked with footprints. She is surrounded by archaeological tools like brush, leaf-and-square and trowel, while two dogs play around the site.

Evidence of water dissolving Mars surface found

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/thumb/msid-18354742,width-300,resizemode-4/Fast-dissolving-water-squeezed-life-out-of-Mars.jpg
LONDON: The first evidence of water dissolving the surface of Mars has been discovered by scientists after studying a small piece of a Martian meteorite that crashed into earth in 1911.

"Scientists at the University of Glasgow together with the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre and the Natural History Museum (London) have discovered the first evidence of water dissolving the surface of Mars," the Glasgow University said in a statement today.

In a paper published in the Meteoritical Society's journal MAPS, the research team outlined the results of tests on a 1.7 gram fragment of a Martian meteorite known as Nakhla, which was provided by the Natural History Museum.

Nakhla, named after the town in Egypt where it landed in 1911 after being blasted from the surface of Mars by a massive impact around 10 million years ago, has been studied for decades by scientists around the world.

Previous research on Nakhla has provided evidence of the existence of water on Mars through the presence in the meteorite of 'secondary minerals' - types of carbonates, hydrous silicates and sulfates most likely formed when Martian minerals reacted with water.

Professor Martin Lee of the University's School of Geographical and Earth Sciences, lead author of the paper, said: "What has been unclear in the past is exactly where the chemical elements which made up the secondary minerals within Nakhla came from.

"Using a scanning electron microscope, we examined many tiny bowl-shaped depressions, known as etch pits, in grains of the minerals olivine and augite found in the meteorite.

"What we've found for the first time is evidence that the etch pits were created when water dissolved the olivine and augite, and that the elements released from those minerals led to the formation of the secondary minerals. It's an exciting discovery and better informs our understanding of how water affected rock on Mars," he said.

By examining the amount of dissolution which occurred in the etch pits, the team have also been able to estimate how long the water was present within the sample.

Professor Lee added: "From the amount of dissolution we observed, it's likely that this particular piece of Mars was affected by water for only a few months and probably less than a year in total.

"That's certainly not long enough to sustain a life-supporting biosphere; however, the findings of our study are from a tiny piece of a very small chunk of the surface of Mars, so it's difficult to draw any large-scale conclusions about the presence of water on the planet or its implications for life.

"Our research does raise fascinating questions about exactly how long ago the water interacted with the part of Mars which Nakhla came from and where the water might have gone.

"We'll be continuing to look for clues to the answers to these questions in future research. Results from Nasa's Curiosity rover, currently on the surface of Mars, will also help us build a clearer picture of the history of Martian water."

But in nearly three years, Google has developed new products, discontinued a few, and offered new features, and more people have found great ways to save time with Google. So we’ve gone and found even more great tips for saving time with Google, and this time around, the list has made it all the way to 181 different tricks. Explore our collection of tricks to find new, faster ways to search, read email, manage your time, and more.
Search Tricks

Google is so much more than a search engine. It’s a reference book, calculator, even a weather forecaster. Using these tricks, you can find helpful information quickly, plus get to the right links faster.
  1. Feel lucky Access the page that Google thinks is the most relevant for your search with the “I’m Feeling Lucky” feature. Chances are, you’ll find a great resource without having to look any further.
  2. Find public data Google offers stores of public data, right in search results. For population and employment rates, just search for “population” or “unemployment rate” plus the state or county.
  3. Find your web history Find websites you’ve visited and even search your own online history with Google’s Web History.
  4. Search within a site Found a site that’s full of great stuff? Narrow down your results within the site by searching for (search query) site (domain).
  5. Search for exact phrases Put quotation marks around “any word” to find an exact phrase more efficiently.
  6. Shorten your search phrases Chances are, you don’t need to type a whole lot to find what you’re looking for. Try shortening your searches to just a few words.
  7. Check the weather in a flash Need to know if rain is going to hold you up on the way to class? Just type “weather” plus the city or zip code, and Google will pop up a forecast for you.
  8. Be descriptive Instead of searching for “celebrity sounds,” which could be a variety of different sounds, look for “celebrity ringtones,” which is much more specific.
  9. Find the file type you’re looking for Search for PDF, doc, even Power Point files by adding a filetype pdf modifier to your search string.
  10. Forget about cases Google’s search isn’t case sensitive, so search for new york times if you’re looking forThe New York Times.
  11. Don’t worry about punctuation, either Search doesn’t pay attention to punctuation and special characters, so don’t bother using them.
  12. Turn Google into a calculator Did you know that Google has a built-in calculator function? Just enter a calculation into the search box, and you’ll get the answer!
  13. Google is a dictionary and thesaurus, too Get definitions by entering “define” before your search term, and discover synonyms by adding a tilde (~), as in, ~cats.
  14. Quickly discover movies and movie showtimes To find movie reviews, showings, and theaters before you head out with friends, just type “movies” plus your zip code for the best results.
  15. Check the time around the world Chatting with your video penpal in Japan? Find out what time it is by searching for “time Japan.”
  16. Get rid of the stuff you don’t want If you keep getting irrelevant results for a certain term, you can exclude words just by placing a minus sign in front of them. So if you want to know about wombats but not necessarily blind wombats, you’d search for wombats -”blind wombat.”
  17. Search with Goggles Use your mobile phone’s camera to search for an item instead of typing words.
  18. Search by voice, too Search the web with speech by tapping the microphone button on your Google search box.
  19. Discover what you don’t know Google can help you fill in the blank with a simple asterisk (*). You can search for “Isaac Newton discovered *,” and Google will complete your sentence.
  20. Check your spelling If you’re not sure how to spell a word, just type your best guess into Google. If you’re wrong, Google will pop up with an alternative, asking, “Did you mean  (correct spelling)?”
  21. Keep finding great sources If you like what you see on a particular website, and would like to find more, just do a related search on Google. For example, “related www.cnn.com” will direct you to more news sites like CNN.
  22. Discover people Thanks to Google Plus, Google offers people profiles for a surprising amount of individuals. Get the quick low-down on your classmates, professors, and even important public figures by simply Googling a person’s name.

Second Twitter hoax in two days, hits another stock

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/thumb/msid-18270664,width-300,resizemode-4/Twitter-to-open-office-in-social-network-crazed-Brazil.jpgNEW YORK: Sarepta Therapeutics Inc became the second company in as many days to see its shares plunge as a result of a Twitter hoax on Wednesday after a user posed as an influential short-seller and alleged improprieties at the biopharmaceutical company.

Sarepta Therapeutics shares plummeted 9.9 percent in a matter of seconds after someone with the Twitter user name @citreonresearc alleged improprieties at the company.

The drop mirrored a similar incident on Tuesday, when Audience Inc fell more than 25 percent following tweets that at a glance looked to be from Muddy Waters, another short-selling firm.

Just as Muddy Waters confirmed it did not send such a tweet about Audience, so too did Andrew Left, the California-based investor who runs Citron, said his company did not send a message about Sarepta.

The twin incidents targeted a pair of Nasdaq stocks that are not among the most actively traded on a daily basis, showing how certain company shares are vulnerable to information posted on social media networks, even if the information is misleading. Sarepta, on average, trades about 1.4 million shares a day; by contrast, average daily volume in chipmaker Intel Corp is about 52 million shares.

"You need a more volatile stock for this kind of manipulation - obviously if you were to try it on IBM it wouldn't work," said Joe Saluzzi, co-manager of trading at Themis Trading in Chatham, New Jersey. "It speaks to the structure of the market where shallow pools of liquidity can be easily pierced on bad news, even if the news is fake."

The US Securities and Exchange Commission had no comment. Twitter did not respond to an emailed request for comment on the messaging activity, but the @citreonresearc account has been suspended. The Twitter account @Mudd1waters, whose Twitter home page looks like Muddy Waters, was still active.

The tweet, with the user name "@citreonresearc," alleged that drug trial results from the biopharmaceutical company had been tainted and doctored, according to screen shots of the posting captured by Twitter users. Sarepta was not immediately available for comments on the trading activity or the account, which has since been suspended.

Matt, a trader in San Diego who did not want to give his last name, but who goes by the handle @given2tweet on Twitter, said, "There's a real severity to that tweet. It's at the core of what the company is, is this one trial."

Sarepta shares recovered after the brief fall. It was trading up 1.4 percent to $27.56 on volume of about 3.5 million shares in afternoon trading. More than 700,000 shares traded in the one minute when the stock suffered its steep decline.

The company, which has a market cap of about $692 million, is volatile, moving more than 1 percent in six of the past seven sessions. It jumped 477 percent in 2012 alone.

Audience went public in May 2012 and has a market cap of $254 million as of Tuesday's closing price, rising about 15 percent so far this year. The stock's 50-day average daily volume is slightly more than 160,000 shares, but that rose to more than 800,000 on Tuesday.

"Not really an efficient market when fake twitter accounts can crash stocks," Tim McClure, equity trader at SMB Capital in New York, wrote on his Twitter page.

Shares of Audience were briefly halted on Tuesday, but Sarepta shares did not reach a threshold necessary to trigger a halt. A Nasdaq spokesperson was not available for comment.

Looking for sex? Facebook app to the rescue

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/thumb/msid-18285582,width-300,resizemode-4/Facebooks-solid-results-are-greeted-cautiously.jpgWASHINGTON: A controversial new sex app called "Bang With Friends" claims to facilitate sexual encounters with users and their Facebook friends without the embarrassment of rejection.

"Anonymously find friends who are down for the night," the company website said.

"Your friends will never know you're interested unless they are too!"

The Bang With Friends app, aimed at 20-somethings, was created by three "college-aged" men from California, who are withholding their identities, according to US media reports.

The app only alerts users of a potential hook-up if both parties express interest by selecting what is called the " Down to Bang" button.

The creators of the app said it has already gained more than 30,000 users, registering five new users every minute according to a report on the online tech site Mashable.

Critics of "Bang With Friends" told RIA Novosti, putting the physical first is the reason for the demise of the majority of marriages and relationships in the US.

"Back in the days people would court, they would go out with different people without exploring the sexual relationship because it allowed you to get to know what you may or may not have in common," said Kristen Crockett, a Washington-based relationship coach.

And while some who use the app may be more interested in sex than building a relationship, Crockett cautions users with the potential drawbacks of getting physical with a Facebook friend.

"Once you start sleeping with someone, your red flags, your fears, all of those things get pushed into the back of your mind," she said.

She added that often people ignore signals and signs because of how the person makes them feel physically.

One of the app's creators told The Daily Beast that the group came up with the idea as a way to improve traditional online dating sites like Match.com.

"It would be great, as guys, if you could find out which girls are actually into you and not dance around anything," he said.

Skip the dating and jump straight to the sex, one of the creators said.

Crockett, who has authored several book on creating lasting relationships, met her current boyfriend of three years on eHarmony.com.

She said the couple spent several weeks emailing and talking on the phone before they met in person.

Crockett said she is a firm believer in using technology to cultivate a relationship, but this app goes about it the wrong way.

"I think the app contributes to people going into a relationship and actually dating backwards," Crocket said.

"It's the exception more than the rule that a relationship will last if it has begun with a physical encounter rather than emotional spark," she added.

Currently the app only matches users of the opposite sex.

"Support for same-sex selections is already under development," the app's creators told Mashable.
